Not vague advice ⤵️ You went to the parent teache Not vague advice ⤵️

You went to the parent teacher conference, hoping to get specific advice to catch up your child. You already read most nights.

⏰The reality is most teachers don’t have that kind of time at conferences with so many students to get specific.

But your child has started to notice the other kids can read chapter books, and it’s impacting their self-esteem. And you’re concerned.

🍀They are lucky to have a parent like you in their corner. And you have me!

👋Hi! I am Anne, a former reading intervention teacher now in private practice.

I taught 2nd grade for 8 years, too, and I noticed my daughter’s dyslexia signs when she was a second grader.

💪I want parents of second graders to know exactly what their child needs to be able to do by the end of the year because you are their best advocate.

1️⃣ Fluency

Your child should start 2nd grade reading about 40 words in a minute and end around 80 words.

This isn’t about fast reading.

Fluency increases comprehension - your child’s ability to understand what they are reading.

And this depends on automatically sounding out words like these skills ⬇️

2️⃣Long vowel teams

Your child can read and spell words with these several of these vowel combinations:
ai, ay, ee, ea, igh, ie, ow, oe, oa, ue, ew

Example: Your child can read and spell the words seed, beach, mail, and pay.

3️⃣ Bossy R Words

They are also called R Controlled. Your child can read and spell these letter combinations:

ar, er, ir, or, ur

Some examples are cart, herd, firm, born, and turt.

——
Once you know which skills your child is weak on, then you can practice them at home.

If you want a printable list of 16 important 2nd grade reading skills, comment SECOND. My friendly Printables Bot will DM you the link.

But make sure to follow first and check your spam DMs. If it’s not there, you might need to DM me first.

Hi! 👋 I’m Anne, your friendly Instagram reading specialist teaching you what they didn’t cover in your school when you were growing up.

I know you just want somebody to tell you what to do step-by-step.

But this part needs to be right⤵️ When your child But this part needs to be right⤵️

When your child is struggling to read, you’d do anything.

The apps, the workbooks, the library trips…

But it can be much easier than you think.

🏁As long as you start in the right place.

Here’s the step-by-step:

1️⃣ You need a phonics word list, dry erase board and markers.

Comment SIMPLE if you want my word list.

2️⃣ Grab your list of words. Start on something that you think would be simple for your child.

Better too easy than too hard.

3️⃣ Channel your inner teacher and write them in your best handwriting.

4️⃣ Give your child a marker to underline the phonics pattern - y as long e in this video.

5️⃣ Repeat this process most days and go through the sequence of the word lists.

It will feel like ✨magic.

But all your really doing is providing them with brain based reading practice:

✅ structured
✅ explicit (ie clear)
✅ built in review

PLUS - there is something about a whiteboard that makes it feel like a game to children. 🎉

Simple. Fast. Zero prep. And it works.

Step-by-step⤵️ but first, if you haven’t yet go b Step-by-step⤵️

but first, if you haven’t yet go back and check out Letter A in this series.

The main problem with letter b…. Reversals.

The best way to fix this ….

Tracing or writing the letters b and d to develop different motor patterns.

If your child starts both lowercase b in lowercase d at the top line, they WILL get confused.

Want to grab Reversal Games for less than your grande iced latte? Comment REVERSAL and I’ll DM you the link.

But make sure you’re following because otherwise the link won’t come through and you’ll miss letter C!

Another type of Christmas magic✨ It is a delight Another type of Christmas magic✨

It is a delight when your first grader child moves from sounding out words into reading sentences and stories and just tearing through books.

If your child isn’t there yet, I got you. My own daughter struggled with reading and I started noticing in first grade.

The teacher kept saying, “she’ll get it when she’s ready.”

Spoiler: that didn’t happen and she’s dyslexic. So now I help parents who want a step-by-step process for catching up on reading at home.

If your first grade is struggling, see which skills are missing:

1️⃣ Orally blend four and five sounds together to form a word.

You say /f/ /a/ /s/ /t/ and your child can say “fast.”

2️⃣ Break apart a 4 and 5 sound word.

You say “bridge” and your child says /b/ /r/ /i/ /j/.

3️⃣Read and spell consonant blends.

Your child can read and spell words like slug, mint, & stamp.

4️⃣ Read and spell consonant digraphs.

Your child can read & spell words like fish, whack, math, chomp.

5️⃣Reads and spells CVCE words (Magic E).

Your child can read and spell words like cake, theme, pine, shore and cute.

—
Those skills are all necessary to be reading first grade level books. But you can work on them one at a time at home.

Need a checklist to print and put on your fridge? Comment FIRST but make sure you’re following first so the link gets through!

I will help. We got this. 💪

I’ll teach you! ⬇️ ✨I went back to school so you I’ll teach you! ⬇️

✨I went back to school so you don’t have to!

I’m breaking down how to sound out words so you can break your child’s guessing habit.

🤯 Now you know the four sounds of letter a, what’s next?

You teach it to your child …

🪜Step-by-step.

1️⃣ get some index cards

2️⃣ write lowercase a on one.

3️⃣ show your child the card and practice making the short a sound.

4️⃣ once they’ve mastered that, then you can introduce the long a sound.

5️⃣ then introduce the remaining sounds one a time

🛑 this is not an overnight process. This is step-by-step a few minutes of daily practice over the course of months for all beginning and struggling readers.

✅ the first step is for you to understand the 44 sounds in English. Comment LIST and I’ll DM you the link to a pdf. But make sure you hit that follow button first!

Let’s make reading feel possible, not painful. I’ll help you. 💪📚

She was shocked by this⤵️ But I wasn’t at all. 😁 She was shocked by this⤵️

But I wasn’t at all.

😁My client texted me that her son was reading willingly - no tantrums, no fighting. He was happy.

He had started using the Sentence Pyramid worksheets….

❌And she no longer had to brace herself for a fight.

This mom isn’t any different than you.

Her older child learned to read pretty easily, and she was wracking her brain trying to figure out what to do with her younger son.

🖨️She started with the Sentence Pyramids and in a short amount of time, the results were amazing.

🚀In six months, his reading scores exploded from reading 8 words per minutes, to reading 52 words per minute.

Like this child’s mom, you can still be a busy working parent and help improve your child’s reading in just a few minutes a day.

If you want the link for the Sentence Pyramid bundle so your child remembers the word on the page and doesn’t sound like a robot, comment REMEMBER.

I’ll DM you the link to 1140 carefully sequenced worksheets to build reading skills from end of kindergarten through end of 3rd grade. Make sure to follow or the link won’t come through.
