🩷I know how you feel. I have been there with m 🩷I know how you feel. I have been there with my own daughter. Those toddler and early childhood influencers told you not to worry about reading. But it’s first or second grade and the reading and spelling aren’t clicking. Their teacher just told you it’s a problem. But the advice “just read more” has been less than helpful. I won’t gaslight you. This is hard but it’s a solvable problem. I got to work. And within six months my daughter went from avoiding reading to staying up too late with a flashlight under the covers. 🙋🏻‍♀️ It was me too, but not anymore! 🙋🏻‍♀️ It was me too, but not anymore! 👋 Hi, I’m Anne, your friendly reading intervention teacher, dyslexia specialist and mom to a struggling reader and speller. When I first started teaching in downtown Los Angeles, my classroom was full of first generation Americans who had no strategies other than guessing. My teacher prep on reading was all “let them see themselves represented in authentic literature and they’ll just figure it out.” 🤦🏻‍♀️😭 Wrong. They did not. Fast forward five years and I taught 2nd grade in Seattle. My principal was BFF with the head of the local dyslexia school and send us all to get trained in structured literacy (Orton-Gillingham). Me: 🤯🤯 There is a simple system to help struggling readers (and really ALL readers) learn to break apart big words. I can teach it to you, too! 1️⃣ Spot the syllable types: cat, go, bike, peach, hard, and pickle have distinct types of syllables. Once you get the hang of this, you can look at a word like 🦋butterfly and instantly see how to break it apart. Webster came up with these when he made the dictionary 150+ years ago. 2️⃣ Split the syllables There are some general strategies to figure out where to break a word into syllables. You can see patterns like breaking muffin into muf-fin, robot into ro-bot, and camel into cam-el. 3️⃣ Flexing to schwa sound That’s all well and good and then we get to words like “apart” and “banana.” Why does that “a” sound like /uh/ sometimes? It’s called the schwa. I’m going to run out of space in the caption but the next two steps are 4️⃣ singling out suffixes and prefixes 5️⃣ spelling multi-syllable words If this sounds like something your child needs you to learn, comment BIG. This should be required teaching and sadly most teachers don’t know this! They didn’t teach me in my preparation program. I got lucky about 15 years ago when my school principal sent me to Orton-Gillingham training and I learned this. 👋 Hi, I’m Anne, a reading intervention teacher, dyslexia specialist and mom to a dyslexic. Helping you teach your child to read is my jam. Here’s four steps for big words: 1️⃣ How to spot syllables There are six predictable syllable types. Teaching your child to spot them helps so much! 2️⃣ Where to split syllables There are some general strategies that help children split words into their written syllables. This helps them see each little chunk of the word and sound out instead of guess. 3️⃣ The schwa sound You know the a in “about” sounds like /uh/. And in bacon, the o sounds like /ih/. That’s the sneaky schwa. Learning about schwa and teaching your child to be flexible with vowel sounds is key! 4️⃣ Suffixes and prefixes Teaching your child basic suffixes like -ing, -ed, -s, -tion and prefixes like non, un, non and pre help break big words down. ….. 🚀Three grade levels in just 15 months?! Did yo 🚀Three grade levels in just 15 months?! Did you know if your struggling reader can sound out: *bird *jam *cake Then you can also teach them to sound out words like: *pickleball *hamburger *expertly *convoluted *mistreating *abandonment That’s exactly what I do with every struggling reader I’ve taught including my own daughter. It’s actually a real easy process. If you can follow directions for a recipe or build IKEA furniture, you can learn this too! These are the steps: 1️⃣ Write the word for your child on a whiteboard or piece of paper. 2️⃣ Underline the vowels. 3️⃣ Look for the consonants in between the vowels. 4️⃣ If there are two consonants together, you divide in between. 5️⃣ If there is just one consonant, you show your child to break the word before the consonant. Seeing this in action makes it a lot easier. And this is exactly what I’ll teach you in Syllable School. It’s a series of four hour long video lessons with loads of printables and worksheets. I’ll show you exactly what to do so you can teach your child.
