I’m Anne, a kindergarten though 6th grade reading specialist and an Orton-Gillingham trained dyslexia interventionist. More importantly, I’m mom to a dyslexic child with other co-occurring disabilities (ADHD and autism). Moms have told me the school has said they’ve tried everything and don’t know what else to do. And I team up with the parents to design an at-home program, and a few months later, the child is reading billboard on the ride home and pull out their homework without an prompting. 🛑You don’t have to wait until 3rd grade! Fir 🛑You don’t have to wait until 3rd grade! First, I am a teacher, too, so this isn’t a teacher problem. It’s a systems problem and it really starts with administration. It’s a lot easier to deal with a reading issue in kindergarten or first grade than 3rd or 4th. Here are three early signs: 1️⃣FAMILY HISTORY Dyslexia runs in families. If there is a family member diagnosed with dyslexia, your child is more likely to develop it. But because it’s misunderstood and under-diagonsed, a family history of reading or spelling problems is also a good indicator. 2️⃣ SPEECH DELAY Speech issues can arise from multiple conditions or developmental issues. But paired with other pre-reading signs, it can be a sign of dyslexia. Dyslexia is a language based learning disability. So difficulty with language is often an indicator. 3️⃣STRUGGLES WITH LETTERS If your child has a hard time learning letter names or sounds, this is often the first sign of dyslexia a family notices. This tends to be pretty easy for typical readers. So a hard time with letters and sounds when a child is five or six is a good reason to keep a watchful eye. 🎉 The good news is dyslexia is really treatable especially with early intervention. Here’s what you should ask if the teacher states or implies learning issues are behavioral: (And yes, I’m a teacher too) 1: what academic interventions have been used at the classroom level? 2: what is the evidence base for those interventions? 3: what data supports that foundational academic skills are present? —— Really instead of fighting with the school, I advise most parents to just take their child’s reading and writing into your own hands. The system is broken and most teachers are doing their best with limited knowledge. Hit follow if you need easy, science of reading based resources to use at home.
I’m also a TEACHER! And I was told my daughter j I’m also a TEACHER! And I was told my daughter just didn’t want to read or write. “Could she possibly have a co-occurring learning disability,” I asked. “No, she just doesn’t want to do it.” “How have you taught it?” “We give them a writing prompt.” 😩😩😩 That’s not teaching. —— 🗣️ Autistic children can also have dyslexia, dysgraphia and/or dyscalculia. Already in second grade, I knew time wasn’t on side for my daughter. We got a private learning evaluation instead of hiring an attorney to get the school to evaluate for learning disabilities. And the neuropsych said, “what has the teacher been doing with her these last two years?” Then she diagnosed dyslexia and advised me to withdraw her and homeschool until we could move districts. And with a yet-to-be diagnosed AuDHD preschooler on the floor and a newborn on my hip, I taught my daughter to read and write in 10-20 minutes most days. Your child needs systematic, explicit direct instruction to learn to read and write. If your school, doesn’t do this, you’re going to either need push for it or decide not to fight and just DIY like me. If you’re willing to: ✅ watch some videos ✅ print some worksheets ✅ spend 5-10 minutes a day for the six weeks then… Your child can become a strong reader. I know you’ve tried before and failed. And it’s not your fault. You see none of us were taught English syllables well enough when we were school to know how to teach our own kids. So let’s set guilt aside and decide what are you going to do about it? I created Syllable School because as I’ve coached parents 1:1, I saw they didn’t have a strategy for big words.
