šŸš€This hack skyrockets reading 1ļøāƒ£ grab a šŸš€This hack skyrockets reading

1ļøāƒ£ grab a pen, a notebook and a book for your child to read.

2ļøāƒ£ look at the first page of the book. Find 2-5 words your child might struggle with

(Examples from my son’s shark book…different, twice, grown)

3ļøāƒ£ write those words in the notebook in as plain handwriting as a you can.

4ļøāƒ£ help your child sound them out

(Hint: underline the vowels and say those sounds first)

5ļøāƒ£ then find those words in the first page with your child. Point them out.

6ļøāƒ£ read that page with your child.

7ļøāƒ£ repeat the next day with the second page and more words. But review the words from day 1.

What you actually need to doā¤µļø āœ…Teach your What you actually need to doā¤µļø

āœ…Teach your child to read.

This is a step-by-step science. Hit follow and I will show you how.

If you can follow a recipe or build a 500 piece Lego set, you can improve your child’s reading.

āŒ Do not drone on and on about how smart they are.

Well, it’s true. It’s glossing over the problem that reading is tough for them.

A pep talk feels insincere in these instances.

āœ… Simple acknowledgment

Say something like, ā€œyeah this is something that’s more challenging for you like XYZ thing is hard me. We’re going to work on.ā€

āŒ Don’t get sucked into this discussion every time

Some kids will learn quickly that an emotional spiral will allow them to get out of practicing.

āœ… Start with games

Seriously. Skip the book. Start with some reading games that will make your child beg you practice. Comment SAMPLE for five free phonics games.

āŒ Don’t have unrealistic expectations

You’re not going to get a child caught up over the summer if they’re three grade levels behind.

But two grade levels in 9 months? I’ve seen that happen with the right support!

Hit share and send this to a mom friend who needs to hear this.

Literacy is foundational for democracy. While rea Literacy is foundational for democracy.

While reading to your child doesn’t teach them HOW to read, it can teach them how to THINK.

Large vocabulary + a lot of knowledge āž”ļøcritical thinking skills

Double tap if you agree.

I was shocked to learn thisā¤µļø 🤯Children ne I was shocked to learn thisā¤µļø

🤯Children need to practice spelling individual sounds before spelling whole words.

(And pssst, this helps with reading too!)

This is easier than you think:
1ļøāƒ£ You simply dictate a sound to your learner like /ē/ (long e sound like in be or eagle).

2ļøāƒ£Then on a piece of paper, or a whiteboard, your child writes all the ways they know to spell the long a sound.

At first they might only write the letter e for the long e sound in the words be and me.

But after you have taught them about Magic E Words, they will also write e-e for that spelling pattern.

3ļøāƒ£ You provide a reminder for any spelling patterns they might know but have forgott n to write down.

Like once they have learned about the sounds of tricky y, they will write ā€œyā€ for words like bunny.

WHY DOES THIS WORK?

Instead of memorizing whole words, this build the sounds to spelling muscle.

Stop correcting every single mistake…do this ins Stop correcting every single mistake…do this instead ā¤µļø

When a coaching client with a struggling fourth grade student first signed up to work with me, she dreaded practicing reading with her son.

You too? I get it…

But lucky for them (and now you too), we worked on her taking notes on her son’s error and looking for patterns.

Then we choose phonics activities to strengthen those weak skills. We started where he would be successful and then less correction was needed in general

And now it’s your turn!

Comment the word SAMPLE below and I’ll send you a sample of my free phonics games

And be sure to save this so you don’t forget ā¤ļøā€
šŸš€Want your child’s reading to take off? Firs šŸš€Want your child’s reading to take off?

First you need to know this ā¤µļø

Reading doesn’t start with your eyes!

Say what?!

šŸ‘‚šŸ½Yeah, it starts with hearing the sounds in language.

See most of us just hear a word as something that carries meaning. So cat means 🐈 not the sounds /c/ /a/ /t/.

So it’s hard to sound out while reading if your child doesn’t get that words are groups of sounds.

Children need to be able to hear each individual sound in a word to sound out.

This is called phonemic awareness.

So the very first place to start with your kindergartener going into first grade is to make sure they can tell you all the sounds they hear in a three sound word.

🐱Start with the word ā€œcat.ā€

šŸ–ļøHold up three fingers

šŸ—£ļøSay, ā€œcat has the sounds /c/ /a/ /t/.ā€

āœ… Now your child can try with CVC words like hen, pig, dog, and pup.

It’s always hard for me to think of words on the spot so if you want a free printable list of 25 CVC words, comment 25.

Make sure you’re following me so the message comes through!
