When to worry ⤵️ It’s a common misconceptio When to worry ⤵️ It’s a common misconception that letter reversals are a primary sign of dyslexia. They are not. Letter reversals can show up two ways: 1️⃣Mixing up the letters b and d while spelling words 2️⃣Troubling with sounding out b and d correctly in words Backwards letters is actually a sign of evolutionary success. Our brain needed to see a tiger as a threat no matter whether its head was oriented to the left or the right. And a triangle is still a triangle no matter its orientation. So seeing b, d, p, and q as different letters is a pretty huge task for a lot of children. 🛑Now this is when dyslexia specialists do start to be concerned about reversals …. ✅It has persisted despite a lot of strategic intervention ✅ It’s accompanied by other dyslexia signs: ➡️Guessing at words ➡️Trouble sounding out ➡️Mixing up other sounds like e and i ➡️Avoiding reading But there is something you can do at home. Show your child how to hold their hands with their thumbs up so their knuckles touch. The left hand looks like b and the right hand looks like d. Trust when I say this⤵️ By reading aloud to y Trust when I say this⤵️ By reading aloud to your child, you are doing SOMETHING. If you’ve been around, you know I say reading aloud to your child won’t teach them HOW to read, but guess what… It can teach them how to THINK. And it does also make learn to read easier. When children have a large vocabulary and know a lot of different things about a variety of topics, it’s easier to match sounding out to a word they already know. So grab 1-2 books tonight that teach your child a message you value. Repeat a couple more times this week. And then come back to tell me that it makes you feel a little better. My oldest child… isn’t easy. She’s juggling a few disabilities and has a big personality. So yeah, when a special education teacher told me my first grade daughter just wasn’t motivated to learn to read or write and it was a behavioral issue…. 🥤I was like “hold my grande iced latte.” I had to learn how to reach the firecracker kids. Fun and Easy Game⤵️ Here’s how I played wit Fun and Easy Game⤵️ Here’s how I played with my kindergarten son: 1️⃣ I printed these free 100 CVC word flashcards from my website. 2️⃣ I cut them apart. 3️⃣ My son sounded out a word. 4️⃣ He blended it together. 5️⃣ He flipped it over to connect the word to meaning. 6️⃣ We took turns pressing down the teeth on this crocodile. 7️⃣ He laughed hysterically and asked to play again. This actually took me zero minutes today because I had these flashcards prepped from my middle son. It will take you about 5-10 to print and cut out the flashcards the first time.
