Your struggling reader might need to be taught that -ck spells /k/ not /k/ /k/. Many struggling readers can read -ck pretty easily, But spelling - that’s a whole thing. What you should actually do⤵️ Yes, medical pr What you should actually do⤵️ Yes, medical professionals are still giving this advice in the year 2024 despite forty years of research called the Science of Reading. 😭 My friends and followers like to DM the posts to me. So I can cry. Disliking reading is an extremely solvable problem for your neurodivergent child. You just need to put on your detective hat.🕵️ Here’s the steps to take: 1️⃣ You need to figure out WHY it’s a non-preferred activity. 2️⃣ Start with: can you child actually read the words on the page easily and automatically? 3️⃣ If no, work on that. I will help you. 4️⃣ If yes, then go through these questions: -is it an attention issue -is it the speaking the words out loud? -How is their vision and ability to track words on a page? - Do they have problems with working memory (keeping multiple thoughts in their head)? 5️⃣ Address the underlying issue. 🛑Your child has to be become a proficient reader. There is no way around it in our society currently. Whether your child works at Target, becomes a plumber or codes for living, reading is required. They can’t audiobook their way out of it. Struggling, dyslexia and ADHD readers need plenty of practice sounding out words with new phonics pattern. When they are learning “dge” makes the /j/ sound, they need to read a bunch of those words.
