SAVE THIS + steal this strategy The amount of ter SAVE THIS + steal this strategy The amount of terrible reading advice from parenting gurus is sickening. As a reading intervention teacher, dyslexia specialist, and mom to a dyslexic, I tell you like it is. Here’s what you need to know: You can’t skip developing YOUR OWN knowledge of sounds. We weren’t taught this in school, and you need it to help your struggling reader. And this is ONE simple activity to get you started. STEP 1 - grab a cheap set of white index cards and one set of colored index cards. STEP 2 - one the white cards, write the simple consonants (b, c, d etc) STEP 3 - on the yellow write the vowels (a, e, i, o, u). Don’t worry about more advanced letters or sound yet. STEP 4 - make sure your child can automatically say the sounds for each letter. STEP 5: lay them flat on a table following a CVC pattern - Consonant vowel consonant -practice blending those into words It doesn’t have to be complicated to make a difference for your child.
