šŸš€ Fast track your child’s reading Most kids šŸš€ Fast track your child’s reading

Most kids needs training wheels to ride a bike. Or they need a booster seat before they can ride in the car with just a seatbelt.

Decodable readers are like training wheels. They are best way to get your child to practice reading a story through decoding (and not guessing!)

I love @chargemommybooks so much that I got a small group set of stages 1-4 for school, plus I have a set for home for my own kids and another for my tutoring clients!

My son seriously LOLs as he reads the books. He’s a skilled reader for his age and still chooses to pick these up for their engaging stories and illustrations. I’ve partnered with Brooke to give you a 10% off coupon code! (#affiliate)

It’s good for any regular priced purchase. But her bundles are already discounted and a great deal.

There are no better decodables available at this affordable price point that I’ve found. I can’t recommend them enough.

Want the link for these books? Comment BOOKS and I’ll DM you!

🤯Step-by-step directions This one simple tool 🤯Step-by-step directions

This one simple tool can change everything so make sure to save.

āž”ļøStep 1: You need a pack of white index cards and colored index cards.

Grab a black marker.

āž”ļøStep 2: On the white index cards write all the basic alphabet consonants b, c, d, and so on.

āž”ļøStep 3: On the colored index cards write all the short vowels: a, e, i, o, u

āž”ļøStep 4: Practice by showing your child the card and saying the sound the letter spells.

Show the b and say, ā€œThis letter spells /b/.ā€ Make the /b/ sound. tell your child to repeat.

āž”ļøStep 5: Lay out three cards. One white, one colored, one white. You’ve made a CVC words.

āž”ļøStep 6: Show your child how to blend it.

——
Why does this work?

For many struggling readers, they need to explicitly make the connection that those letters represent sounds.

By practicing each sound alone, then making a word with it, they can learn to see words as chunks of sounds grouped together.

CONFUSED?

I teach this even more in-depth in my program Sounds School and become your Reading 911. I’ll answer all your questions to help your child.

Plus I give you these sounds cards to print out and all the advanced sounds like ch, wh, ea, igh, -tch, -ck and tons more.

Comment INFO and I’ll DM you to see if I think I can help your child and you!

3ļøāƒ£ Early Signs of Dyslexia Many people still 3ļøāƒ£ Early Signs of Dyslexia

Many people still think dyslexia is pretty rare. It is not.

Dyslexia impacts about 20% of the population.

ā€¼ļøIt’s also important for you to know I cannot diagnose dyslexia.

I can provide you with the information you take to the school or pediatrician.

āž”ļøHere are three signs:

1ļøāƒ£FAMILY HISTORY

Dyslexia runs in families.

If there is a family member diagnosed with dyslexia, your child is more likely to develop it.

But because it’s misunderstood and under-diagonsed, a family history of reading or spelling problems is also a good indicator when there are other signs.

2ļøāƒ£ SPEECH DELAY

Speech issues can arise from multiple conditions or developmental issues other than dyslexia.

But paired with other pre-reading signs, it can be a sign of dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. So difficulty with language is often an indicator.

3ļøāƒ£ STRUGGLES WITH LETTERS

If your child has a hard time learning letter names or sounds, this is often the first sign of dyslexia a family notices.

This tends to be pretty easy for typical readers. So a hard time with letters and sounds when a child is four or five years old is a good reason to keep a watchful eye.

—
I want you to understand dyslexia is not the problem. It is easily treatable especially if we catch it early and start the right reading and spelling programs immediately.

🩷 I get it. I’ve been there with my child. I do this every day with other children. I’m here to help.

🤯you NEED to know this about the alphabet Lots 🤯you NEED to know this about the alphabet

Lots of people have opinions about learning to read but I’m sharing the research.

Save this for later!

1ļøāƒ£ When entering kindergarten, strong letter name knowledge is the best predictor for future reading success.

Even when controlled for socio-economic status, vocabulary and other factors, letter naming is a durable and reliable predictor (Foulin 2005).

2ļøāƒ£ Your child doesn’t need to know all the letters and sounds prior to kindergarten.

Research indicates that knowing 18 capital letters, 15 lowercase letters, and a handful of sounds is protective against reading failure in first grade (Piasta & Wagner, 2015).

3ļøāƒ£ Some people will say letter sounds are more important than letter names. That’s not true.

Research byĀ Piasta and Wagner (2010)Ā  found that teaching letter names only improved children’s letter sound knowledge.

But the opposite wasn’t true. Teaching letter sounds doesn’t transfer to learning letter names.

This is likely because the letter sounds are embedded in many letter names like /b/ is in B.

WHY DO I CARE?

Difficulty with letters is a strong predictor for dyslexia. One in 5 kids are dyslexic. That’s 5 kids in every class.

Early intervention is key.

I’m a kindergarten reading specialist. I also have a dyslexic child.

Parents have the right to accurate information!

šŸ›‘ Don’t wait a minute longer. At the beginni šŸ›‘ Don’t wait a minute longer.

At the beginning of second grade, we called an IEP meeting for our daughter.

Her spelling was atrocious. She couldn’t spell the word ā€œpet.ā€ That’s a kindergarten skill.

She could read but she would make wild guesses and skip words altogether. The school OT told me she was just a fast reader and not to worry.

Sigh.

I asked about phonological awareness because I knew she couldn’t hear sounds in words.

ā€œOh she tested out of that in iReady.ā€

We knew we couldn’t rely on the school to fulfill their basic legal obligations. I knew we couldn’t afford to waste another second.

We pulled $3000 from our house savings (yep we still rent because of our kids’ needs) and visited a well-respected neuropsychologist In the area.

When we had the parent debrief, she shared Molly scored less than the 1st percentile on the CTOPP - the gold standard for phonological skills.

She also scored high in intelligence.

She advised us to pull her out of public school and for me to homeschool until I could find a better placement.

So we got to work. And you can too.

And you probably need to do it yourself, too.

You might need to send them to school so you can work. Or because at least they are getting math and science and art.

Education is moving in the right direction but not fast enough for your child. So do not wait.

If you want an easy way to start, grab my phonics read and spell games. They are on a flash sale and the literally walk your child from learning 6 letter sounds to reading words, to more and more complex patterns.

ā¬‡ļø 2 more early signs of dyslexia ā€¼ļøBut ā¬‡ļø 2 more early signs of dyslexia

ā€¼ļøBut first, save this!

4ļøāƒ£ Mistakes with high-frequency words like is, in and it.

Dyslexic children often have trouble with function words because they look alike and aren’t as connected to meaning.

5ļøāƒ£Lack of phonetic spelling

Dyslexic children might refuse to write or their spelling might not make sense.

Dyslexia is NOT a problem.

Parental denial is a problem.

Ineffective reading instruction is a problem.

Delayed intervention is a problem.

Hi! I’m Anne.

I’m a kindergarten reading specialist and mom to three.

When I first saw signs of autism in my daughter, popular influencers would say,

ā€œDon’t worry. Kids develop at their own rate. They all get there eventually.ā€

No, some don’t.

When I later noticed learning disability signs, it was the school staff who said,

ā€œYou’re worrying too much.ā€ I wasn’t.

$3000 worth of private neuropsychological evaluations later and we know she is autistic and dyslexic.

The mom gut is usually right. I’m in your corner.

When others say, ā€œDon’t worry,ā€ I’ll give you facts and strategies.

Because no mom should feel helpless about helping her kid learn to read and write.
