It’s not that your child needs more time. Longitudinal studies demonstrate that 90% of children who are struggling with reading at the end of first grade will likely be struggling in fourth grade. (Juel, 1988; Francis et al, 1996; Shaywitz et al, 1999). 🎉But there is good news. These same studies found the cause is skill deficits. And you can get your child some serious support to learn those skills. You can DIY good reading teaching at home. Hit follow and let me be the mom friend who helps you. ⤵️Tired of the word-by-word reading? Your chi ⤵️Tired of the word-by-word reading? Your child probably is too. But a lot of dyslexic and struggling reader don’t just pick up fluent reading. You need to teach them. Listen, their teacher has 25+ other children and likely has an out-dated curriculum. Funding cuts will only make this worse. But I have a free resource you can use at home to see real results in 5-10 minutes a day. FIRST, you have to commit. This is like flossing, exercising and saving money. You have to be willing to trust this process for a good six weeks of 5 minutes a day. SECOND, you need to be able to print these worksheets within 24 hours. ⤵️You can do this now 1. Grab a cheap noteboo ⤵️You can do this now 1. Grab a cheap notebooks. 2. At the top of a blank page, write down DGE. 3. Below write the words badge, wedge, bridge, dodge, and smudge. 4. Tell your child that DGE spells the sound /j/ when it’s next to a short vowel. 5. Help your child highlight the DGE in the five words. 6. Ask your child to sound them out. 7. Flip the page. 8. Ask your child to spell those same words. BAM! You’ve just done a structured literacy mini-lesson. You’ve taught your child a phonics skill that they can apply in future reading and writing. Save that cheap notebook.
