Fun and Easy Game⬇️ Here’s how we played: Fun and Easy Game⬇️

Here’s how we played:

1. I printed these free 100 CVC word flashcards from my website.

2. I cut them apart.

3. My son sounded out a word.

4. He blended it together.

5. He flipped it over to connect the word to meaning.

6. We took turns pressing down the teeth on this crocodile.

😂He laughed hysterically.

This actually took me zero minutes today because I had these flashcards prepped from my middle son.

I get it.

Your child has worked soooooo hard just to remember that e spells the long e sound like:
✅me
✅be
✅she

Now you throw an ee and an ea and then and the meltdown starts in 3… 2…. 1…

I got you. This is what to do:

But first, you need to understand that these three steps are the foundation for good reading and spelling.

It seems simple but just like going for a walk, you do it often, it will build a muscle.

1️⃣ Sound Drill

Some schools or programs call this the visual drill or the flashcard drill.

You show your child that a sound spelled with 2-3 letters is still one sound by teaching it on a flashcard.

These come from my program Sounds School by you can DIY with index cards and a marker.

2️⃣ Blending Drill

Seeing how the sound cards can be arranged to make a word is MIND-BLOWING for most beginning and struggling readers.

Do not skip this step. You take for granted that words are made of sounds.

Your child needs to visually see it.

3️⃣ Spelling Drill

Aka auditory drill in some programs, but it’s really just listen and then spelling sounds all by themselves.

Just write those sound-spellings down!

A lot of program use sand to build retention but I’ve seen so much growth from my children and clients when they just write down the sounds.

You can use a sheet like I have in Sounds School or just use paper or dry erase.

I taught a teacher-mom with a fifth grade student I am working this summer. She was like “why haven’t we been doing this all along?! It’s working so well.”

🤯 I didn’t know this! The letter n spells th 🤯 I didn’t know this!

The letter n spells the sounds /n/ like nut and the sound /ng/ like you hear in link.

I remember trying to help my daughter spell bank - only to say /b/ /a/ /n/ /k/ but we say bank.

Two things are going on:
1. First n is spelling the sound /ng/

2. /ng/ is a nasalized sound so it makes the vowel before it sound less clear. Instead of the true /a/ like apple, you’re hearing the whiny short a sound like in ant.🐜

Here are some more words you can help your child read and spell:

-tank
-stink
-honk
-bunk

In many Orton-Gillingham programs (that’s the method used to teach kids with dyslexia), they call these welded or glued sounds.

By practicing the chunks:
-ank
-ink
-unk
-onk
you’re helping them see how the vowel works with the consonants afterwards.

Save this tip for your next reading practice time.

Reading is code breaking⬇️ Letters are symbol Reading is code breaking⬇️

Letters are symbols that represent speech sounds.

When we sound out, we are decoding the letters to speech.

When we spell, we are encoding the sounds to letters.

By working on spelling sounds and words this summer, your child will be a stronger reader.

This can be short, fun, and hands-on. My five year old loves it.

It’s one of these five reasons that your child d It’s one of these five reasons that your child dreads practicing with you….

And it’s not that you haven’t read out loud enough or don’t have the right books….

1️⃣ You’re asking them to do something too hard.

For a struggling reader, you need to start at the just right spot.

If you start with something that’s way too easy, they will feel like a baby.

But most likely you have started with something that is way too hard, and they are missing critical skills before it.

2️⃣ Reading practice is always the same, and it’s boring.

our brains love novelty. You need to mix up the way you practice not just read from a chapter book 20 minutes a day.

Games are my favorite way to practice with reluctant readers.

3️⃣ You provide too much correction.

Struggling readers absolutely need to have their mistakes pointed out.

But how you do it is so important.

Try silently putting your finger under the word instead of saying “whoops” or “no.” Then give your child 5-10 seconds to figure it out.

4️⃣ You need to do more review.

Some parents insists their child knows all their sounds. But once I assess them, I realize it’s not that solid.

This doesn’t mean you’re wrong in your assessment of your child, but it probably means you need to include more review of basic skills.

5️⃣ Your own understanding of English just isn’t that strong.

when you can’t explain how to sound out a word or why a certain combination of letters makes a certain sound, it’s frustrating to both your kid and you.

This is not your fault! Most of us went to school when we were just told to memorize words.
